Donation brings portable ultrasound to SMH

Surrey, BC – Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Medical Imaging department has obtained a portable ultrasound unit following a contribution made to Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation has donated $59,000 to purchase the portable ultrasound unit, which is used at the bedside when the patient’s condition is too critical to move. It is the first such unit for the Medical Imaging department, while other units are located elsewhere in the hospital.

The portable ultrasound unit offers the functionality and high performance of a full-sized ultrasound system but in a portable design. “The portable unit allows for bedside examination and will result in faster diagnoses and treatment,” says Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Head of Medical Imaging, Dr. Dennis Janzen.

Better health care for British Columbians is a priority of the Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation, which was incorporated more than 50 years ago. Since its inception, the Foundation has made grants totalling millions of dollars.

Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation helps fund the hospital’s urgently-needed equipment each year. In addition, the Foundation has set a goal of $15-million for its Emergency Centre Campaign, which will be officially launched in April of 2007. The Foundation’s $15-million will be added to the B.C. government’s contribution to ensure the hospital’s new Emergency Centre is state-of-the-art. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008.
