Shoppers Drug Mart makes SMH Foundation ‘Tree of Life’ recipient

Surrey, B.C. – Six Shoppers Drug Mart stores have come together to make Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation the recipient of the stores’ Tree of Life campaign. The money raised will go towards the Foundation’s $15 million Emergency Centre Campaign.

From September 22nd to October 19th, proceeds from the purchase of a leaf ($1), maple leaf ($5), or apple ($50) from the six Shoppers Drug Mart stores will be directed towards Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation as well as a few select national charities. Since 2002, the Tree of Life campaign has enabled customers and employees to give back more than $7.1 million to communities across Canada.

The stores taking part in the campaign on behalf of the Foundation are:
• Central City Shopping Centre – 10045 King George Highway
• Evergreen Mall – 8962 152nd street
• Newton/Surrey – 13753 72nd avenue
• 108th avenue – 14819 108th avenue
• Nordel Crossing – 101- 12080 Nordel Way
• Clayton SC – 18677 Fraser Highway

Surrey Memorial Hospital’s current ER – the busiest in B.C. - was designed to handle about 44,000 visits a year but has instead been seeing close to 70,000 patients a year.

The new Emergency Centre, at triple the size of the current facility, will include a separate children’s ER, as well as a separate mental health and addictions area, an enhanced minor treatment unit, and an improved area for acute patients.

The B.C. government has committed to funding the essentials of a replacement to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s current E.R. The Foundation’s $15-million campaign will ensure the new Emergency Centre is state-of-the-art. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2008.
