SMH Foundation director honoured for Children’s Health Centre leadership

Surrey, B.C. – The President of Surrey’s Flag Chevrolet has been honoured for his longstanding volunteer work and leadership role with Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation, including one milestone in particular – the opening of the Children’s Health Centre in 2001.

As part of Surrey Memorial Hospital’s 50th anniversary celebrations, a plaque has been unveiled at the Children’s Health Centre in recognition of Sherrold Haddad. As well, Haddad has been made the Foundation’s first and only lifetime board director.

The tributes are in appreciation of Haddad’s nearly 14 years of volunteer work with the Foundation, including five years as chair leading up to the grand opening of the Children’s Health Centre in March of 2001. During his time as chair, the Foundation raised $10 million for the new addition to the hospital.

The Children’s Health Centre now sees thousands of pediatric patients each year, providing care for cancer, diabetes, asthma, heart ailments and other illnesses. In 2008, the Family Birthing Unit delivered close to 4,200 newborns – the second most births of any hospital in the province.

“The Children’s Health Centre was the Foundation’s very first major campaign,” notes current Foundation chair Jacy Wingson. “Sherrold’s leadership role was instrumental in rallying the community together successfully in support of a facility that is so critical to the care of our children from birth right through adolescence.”

Haddad is also currently playing a leadership role in the Foundation’s Emergency Centre Campaign by pledging $100,000 towards the replacement to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department.

“We are tremendously grateful for everything Sherrold has done and continues to do for Surrey Memorial Hospital,” says hospital Executive Director Loretta Solomon. “He has given a lot of his time and money to ensuring Surrey receives the best health care possible.’

Established in 1992, Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation has raised more than $50 million to purchase medical equipment, fund innovative programs, and support training and research.

The Foundation is currently involved in its largest fundraising initiative ever, a campaign to raise $15 million to triple the size of the hospital’s Emergency Department.

The B.C. government has committed to funding the essentials of a replacement to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s current E.R. The Foundation’s $15-million campaign will ensure the new Emergency Centre is state-of-the-art.
